To remove the Buttplate from the
M1 Garand's Buttstock I start by opening the cleaning
kit access door and removing anything that may be
contained therein. In the case of my rifles there
is almost always a combo tool and a cleaning kit
or oiler.
Next take a standard
slotted screwdriver or the GI Combo tool and remove
the short Upper Buttplate Screw.
Loosen and remove the Lower Buttplate Bolt.
With both of the screws removed, the Buttplate simply
pops off.
The Lower Buttplate Bolt uses the Rear Swivel
as a nut. When the Lower Buttplate Bolt is removed,
simply pull the swivel out.
To finish the detail stripping of the
Buttstock turn your attention to the muzzle end
of the Stock.
