How To Detail Strip The M1 Garand Gas Cylinder
 

The Gas Cylinder Lock holds the Gas Cylinder on. If you are just inspecting or cleaning the Gas Cylinder leave the Gas Cylinder Lock completely alone. However if you are taking the rifle all the way down then remove Gas Cylinder Lock by simply spinning it on the end of a finger in a counterclockwise rotation until the Gas Cylinder Lock comes loose.

When the Gas Cylinder Lock is disengaged from the threads pull the Gas Cylinder Lock off of the barrel.

It is now a simple matter to remove the Gas Cylinder. In order to do this simply grasp the Gas Cylinder firmly by either the sight or the bayonet lug and pull it forward and off of the end of the barrel.

If the Gas Cylinder is particularly tight a light rap on the rear of the bayonet lug with a short block of wood will has proven effective.
