Re-Assembly of the Gas System Of the M1 Garand Rifle

The most critical part of the Gas Cylinder re-assembly process is placing the Gas Cylinder on the Barrel.

It is important that the Gas Cylinder be tight on the barrel via its mounting. If the Gas Cylinder is not tight the sight picture can change and accuracy problems can result. Another possible ill affect is that failure to put the Gas Cylinder on perfectly could occlude or partially occlude the gas-hole on the Barrel resulting in functional problems.

Again, it is important to make certain the Rear Handguard is set back against the Lower Band completely.

Next slip the Gas Cylinder onto the barrel. The front sight should be forward and the stacking swivel toward the rear as shown below.

If all is well, pushing the Gas Cylinder onto the barrel will require a little bit of gentle pressure for the last 1/4 inch or so. The goal here is for the splines that hold the two pieces together to grip firmly resulting in zero wobble of nay part of the assembly.

It is beyond the scope of this website to explain how to peen the Barrel should the Gas Cylinder fit not be tight enough, but it is a delicate process and one that should be done by someone who has been trained to do so as a mistake can result in even more severe problems.

It is now time to lock everything down...
